How the Ecofan Stove Fan Works:

• The Ecofan generates its own electricity through the difference in temperature.

  The base must make contact with a heat source of at least 150ºF (65°C) and the top of the fan must remain cool. The Ecofan needs to draw cooler air from behind in order to operate. The actual rotation of the blade as well as the cooler air and the heat source are the essential elements needed for the Ecofan to operate.

• Be sure to position the Ecofan on a smooth, flat surface on your stovetop.

  Put it near the side or back of the stove where cooler air can be drawn from behind and over the cooling fins. • We recommend the use of a stove top thermometer for stove safety as the Ecofan can overheat.

  Read the instructions included with the ecofan. If the stovetop surface is hotter than 650 degrees F (370 degrees C), the built in overheat protector will activate. If this happens, simply move the Ecofan to a cooler spot on the stovetop and the overheat protector will reset automatically.

• These ecofans have a thermoelectric module which acts as a small generator to power the fan's motor.

  When this generator module experiences a heat differential between its top and bottom surfaces, it pumps out electricity. The bottom surface of the module is heated by the base of the fan, while the top of the module is kept cooler by the fan's top cooling fins.

Let's talk about The Seebeck Effect for all you techno geeks:
The generator module is a unique semiconductor device that relies upon the Seebeck effect to generate electricity. When two dissimilar semiconductors (p-type and n-type) at the same temperature are connected together they establish a static electric potential difference. With the introduction of a temperature difference heat flows across the joined semiconductors which in turn permits electrons to flow. With the electron flow or current comes the ability to power electrical devices such as the fan's motor.
