We’re lucky enough to have our products mentioned in several truly fabulous publications, blogs, websites, and even the full-color glory of television. Greenfeet Brings Out the Fun in “Going Green”
July 22, 2009

Valerie Reddemann, Greenfeet President

Living a “green” lifestyle has become a trend throughout the last few years. We often see ads urging us to buy recyclable bags so we aren’t wasteful or buy local so our money doesn’t go to the wrong place. These ideas all make sense but they often leave consumers feeling guilty about their lifestyle. Greenfeet takes “going green” to a whole new level by teaching customers that changing your habits can not only be helpful, it can be fun. “We put the fun back into business,” said Valerie Reddemann, founder of Greenfeet. “We take what we do seriously but don’t take ourselves too seriously.” Greenfeet is an e-tailer with over 3,000 eco-friendly and sustainable goods. They sell everything from solar flashlights to natural soaps to totes made from recycled children’s storybooks. Thousands of customers buy products from Greenfeet each month.

Drink up with reusable hemp tea bags
June 22, 2009

Hemp Tea Bag

When you start looking for ways to conserve and cut down on waste, you can find them in almost every corner. Take tea bags, for example. Even if you've mastered the "reuse it before you toss it" trick, you're still throwing away every tea bag you use. Loose tea leaves are automatically a step up from bagged tea. You immediately set yourself apart from the crowd as a tea connoisseur, and you just know you're cooler than, like, 95 percent of the people you know. And if you serve your loose tea leaves in a reusable hemp tea bag, you skyrocket to entirely new levels of in the know. Hemp is one of the strongest natural fibers available, and it's grown without pesticides. And no, it's not illegal, and it won't get you high.

Sink Faucet Aerator

Our bathrooms are part of our clean and healthy behaviors and yet they are also one of the biggest health hazards in our homes. We hoard loads of chemicals in this small room. From air fresheners and perfumes to pipe de-cloggers to chlorine bleach to toxic toys. So here are a few tips to reduce your carbon footprint in the bathroom and be clean and sustainable at the same time.
-Buy recycled and non-bleached toilet paper
-Recycle your TP rolls
-Use a sink faucet aerator to curb your water usage. In California we don’t have much water and we should treat it as gold! We can’t afford to waste it because we need it to survive. So use water wisely!

Get dad into the green: Have an organic Father’s Day
June 6, 2009

Klean Kanteen Classic

Dad’s trying to get on track: If the fruit idea intrigues you because dad likes to stay healthy, try getting him a new stainless steel water bottle. As you may have read in articles posted in the green community section of Creative Loafing, plastic water bottles can omit dangerous toxins when mixed with heat and other factors. The new health rage now is getting a stainless steel water bottle. One of the cool ones I have seen is the Klean Kanteen. One of the reasons I like this company is that you can chose your own cap! Some people like the twisty, while some like the rapid flow version. You can pick one out of three different types which is a nice bonus. If you don’t want to order one, you can find these new stainless steel water bottles at most sports stores in your neighborhood.

Herbal Armor Insect Repellent Spray by All Terrain

Herbal Armor Insect Repellent Spray 2oz

What I love most about Herbal Armor Insect Repellent is that it uses all natural ingredients and contains no Deet or petrochemicals. It’s water and sweat resistant, too. It works really well for up to 4 hours thanks to the new “time release” protection, so it’s perfect for an entire afternoon of fun outside. I found that most bug sprays have a really terrible strong smell, but this has a gentle geranium and citronella scent from the essential oils it contains.

 Bamboo Reusable Spork

If I have a spoonlike shallow scooping implement with pointy things on one edge of it then I can call it anything I like. I can but I won't, because someone else has done that work for me. And today I'm feeling especially lazy. So what should we call our spoonlike shallow scooping implements? Well, last week it was "spork." Other names that work are "foon" and "runcible spoon". Let's say foon this time. Even though the seller calls it a "Bamboo Reusable Spork". It's another kind of implement entirely, with a spoon on one end and a fork on the other.

Interview Time!!
April 1, 2009

I contacted Val Reddeman, president of Greenfeet, and co-host of the wonderful show More Hip Than Hippie , at the end of last year regarding doing an eco interview.
How did Greenfeet Evolve?
A fusion of time and passion. Back in 1997 when I started, being ‘green’ wasn’t hip – it was crunchy. People thought I was nuts creating a company based on the idea that you could enjoy the benefits of a modern world while limiting potential dangers to both your health and the planet. Boy, have times changed.

Floppy Disc Journal

We’ll admit it. We miss floppy disks. We miss sliding them into the drive, loading up a game on the old ‘64, and going to town. But they’re not coming back. So the Floppy Disk Journal from Greenfeet will have to do.
The floppy disc notebook cover is made from a used, vintage 8” floppy disk from the late 1970’s or early 1980’s, contains 90 pages of recycled, acid free, 20lb ivory colored stationary that contains a minimum of 30% post consumer waste. The back cover contains the history of floppy disks and other portable data storage mediums.

Sustainable Cork: Out of the Bottle and onto the Table
March 27, 2009

bambu Cork Collection

According to the World Wildlife Foundation, cork extraction is one of the most environmentally friendly harvesting methods. A cork tree lives up to 200 years, quickly regenerating and continuing to flourish while the outer bark is harvested every 10 to 12 years. The trees also play an important role in balancing ecosystems, and cork production helps to provide a sustainable livelihood for many communities.
Bambu's new line of sustainable cork tableware is lightweight, durable, and perfect for spring. Naturally hypo-allergenic, anti-microbial, and anti-fungal, it is a healthy alternative to plastic. It contains no PVC or formaldehyde and has been deemed food safe by the FDA. Cork is gentle on knife blades (good for cutting boards) and the high-density composition won't absorb liquids.

Using essential oils in the Kitchen
March 3, 2009

When I tell people that I use essential oils in recipes, I get a somewhat confused yet curious look. If you want to enhance your digestion AND impart deep flavor to your food, I suggest the following:

  • Add a drop of essential oil to your salad dressing. Lemon, dill, tangerine, tarragon, ginger and orange are all good choices.
  • Stir a drop of peppermint in your vanilla or chocolate ice cream.
  • Oregano, Marjoram, Thyme, Rosemary, and/or Basil are wonderful additions to a bowl of soup.
  • All the citrus oils (orange, grapefruit, lemon, tangerine, and a blend called Citrus Fresh) perk up your water AND aid in weight loss as they provide a gentle yet very effective detox for your cells!
  • Flavor up your brownies with peppermint, cinnamon, or nutmeg.
  • Make a fruit smoothie or sorbet with the citrus oils.
  • www.greenfeet.com has some great recipes.

    Green Gadget: Plastic bag dryer
    February 25, 2009

With spring right around the corner and summer close behind I'm certain that some of us are beginning to think about the warm weather activities. One of my favorite warm weather past times (and I'm sure that I'm not alone) is grilling out in the back yard. While the environmental impact of grilling is negligible compared with most of the other things we do in our daily lives, it is important that we scrutinize everything that we do and how it impacts the environment.
If you must use disposable dishes and flatware, look for recycled paper dishes or other biodegradable products, like bamboo plates, or potato and corn based utensils. Recycle after your picnic. If you can't find a recycle bin where you are, bring recyclables home to recycle.

    Fresh breath without feeling bad
    January 19, 2009

According to Ideal Bite, a web site that posts daily tips for green living, Americans toss away nearly fifty million pounds of toothbrushes each year. Regardless of the accuracy of this statement, it couldn't hurt to curb consumption during our daily hygienic routines.
Idea Bite (which also has a very nifty e-newsletter) offers some suggestions for being green without staying smelly:
    • Use recycled/recyclable toothbrushes. Greenfeet offers a green (toothbrush) made from recycled yogurt cups.
    • Make sure you use all of your toothpaste before you toss out the tube. Not only do you prevent more waste from ending up in landfills, but you also save money (and that's a big deal for college students). Try cutting your toothpaste tube in half before tossing; most likely you'll end up with more toothpaste than you thought you had.

To the rescue: the return of the beanbag chair.
One of our favorites, and remarkably elegant, is this from Greenfeet.com, an online retailer specializing in all-natural, eco-friendly products. This one is made of a twill unbleached cotton cover, which you can remove and toss in the washer after Junior has his way with it. The water- and energy-saving smart showerhead
    January 13, 2009

    Roadrunner Eco-Friendly Showerhead

File this one under “where there is a need, there is usually a product to fill it”. When my kids have to take a shower, it always seems like the water is running for five minutes before they ever get in. So not only are we wasting water, we are also wasting electricity as we have an all-electric house. Enter the Roadrunner Eco-Friendly Showerhead. This little example of ingenuity solves all my water-wasting, energy-sapping troubles related to my kids’ shower times. First, it is a low-flow 1.59 gpm head that saves water when it’s in use, but the stream is so powerful, you would never know. But the real magic is the ‘ShowerStart’ feature, its ability to sense the temperature when you first start running the hot water. When it detects that the water has reached approximately 95 deg. Fahrenheit, it slows the water flow to a trickle, keeping the hot water in the pipe, but not letting gallons go down the drain. Once you are ready to get into the shower, you simply flip the little valve on the side of the head (a quick pull on the little cable does the trick) and the water resumes its normal flow! These products are available from several online retailers, but I purchased from Greenfeet, a long-time web purveyor of eco-friendly products. I highly recommend them!

    * Eco-friendly Product Guide - Recycled Paper Brown Bags
    September 17,2008

The brown-bag lunch has long been an American staple, from school kids to even the office worker throwing his/her lunch in the fridge at work (commonly also with things such as “Steve’s lunch…DO NOT EAT” written all over it). In keeping with the green lifestyle, lunchbags should be a simple thing to come by. The Recycled Paper lunch bags from NaturalValue.com are a great alternative to the traditional brown paper lunch. Take your lunch to work, or send the kids to school with these bags. Doing so will provide a good feeling, knowing that even something as simple as packing up that lunch can be good for the environment. When you are done, you can just toss the bag in the recycle bin and send it back to which it came. It’s the perfect lunchtime scenario, really. These recycled paper lunch bags are available through Greenfeet.com for only $1.79 per 50 count of bags.

Wanna Try? Tricks for keeping track of how long you spend in the shower:
    • Time yourself with a kitchen-egg timer, stopwatch, or the Shower Coach - an electricity-free timer that suctions onto your bathroom tiles ($5).
    • Put on a favorite album and figure out how long you're in the shower based on the number and length of songs that play by the time you get out.
    • Put the stopper in the tub and see how much water collects as you shower.

I can’t believe the holidays are here again. You can get a jump start on the Halloween season, with this fun Halloween Limited Edition ChicoBag. Like all ChicoBags, this bag above is eco-friendly, but extra special (it was designed by a 12 year old). This fun bag holds 20 lbs of candy, WAY more than one child can collect. After Halloween, you can add this bag to your shopping bag arsenal. Bonus - “A percentage of the sale of each bag will be contributed to Treeswing, the organization making Green Halloween (and other great initiatives) possible.”
    * Treehuggingfamily.com - Classic Tree Blocks for Baby
    Sept 12th 2008

The 22 piece Classic Tree Blocks set is approved for ages 3 to adult, but in my opinion, so long as a baby can’t swallow them whole, blocks are a great idea. All little ones like to stack and knock over blocks. Blocks are also noted as being one of the best child development toys ever. Click Here to read the rest of the blog entry.

    * This is a video from our friends at Our Renewable Nation. They have been long time listeners to our podcast More Hip Than Hippie. They are doing some great things to raise awareness, and we would like to ask you to lend them your support. Here is a little information about the from their site: "For the months of May and June 2009, our family will be touring the U.S. in our vegetable oil-powered VW Beetle as an eco-video travel project. We will be visiting large-scale sites like wind and solar farms, as well as new companies with potentially game-changing technologies that will be key to a sustainable future. We will also be interviewing people whose ideas and actions have inspired many to live more sustainably. Our 9-year-old son Carrick, whose award-winning eco-videos have been seen online by over 200,000 people, will narrate our videos. Our goal is to distribute our video profiles to schools nationally and online, with the mission of inspiring and empowering kids to create a renewable and sustainable future."

    * Work It Mom - Juice Glasses
    Sept 9, 2008

The last time my mother-in-law was coming for a visit, I got a bee in my bonnet about having Good Dishes for guests instead of the mishmash of clearance open-stock dishes we usually use. I did a lot of searching for the perfect set (I wanted dressy in a grandmotherly way, and not too delicate), and finally chose Johnson Brothers Old Britain Castles in blue. Next I turned my attention to juice glasses, and that’s where I ran into trouble. Do you know how difficult it is to find 8-ounce juice glasses? Very difficult, that’s how difficult. It’s easy to find short glasses, but they’re for cocktails and they hold 12 or 14 ounces—too much for juice. I looked in several stores and some of them had literally none—or only colorful plastic options, which we already have. Thank goodness for the internet. ...These recycled 8-ounce glasses from Greenfeet are the most tempting to me. They’re gorgeous, and they come in EIGHT different colors.
